This course is an introduction to photography techniques and their creative application, through the use of 35mm film SLR or digital SLR (DSLR) cameras with full manual controls.

This course would be useful for:
- Web and Graphic Designers
- Musicians
- Film Makers
- Fashion Designers
- and anyone with a keen interest in photography

Learning Styles:
Taught elements, demonstrations and hands on practical tasks with tutor support.

Personal Study:
This course will involve some personal study outside the class, including up-loading course work and project photography for on-line assessment and/ or feedback.

On completion, students acheive a Level 2 Award in Photography.

What will I learn?

The course content will cover the use and function of apertures, shutter speeds, focusing, lenses and flash in the studio and on location. The course will include four specific assignments designed to further your knowledge and practical ability in these areas, including the study of a leading photographic practitioner.(Advisory note: Film camera users should note, most students will be using digital SLR (DSLR) cameras. The course content necessarily focuses on the specifics of using digital, i.e. histograms, white balance, file format etc. This does not preclude students using film but some aspects will be relevant only to digital users).

How will I be assessed?

There are two assessed units comprising of some technical photography exercises and a personal photography project. This programme is assessed through online coursework, which involves some written elements. There are no exams.

Entry requirements

You should have an interest in photography and the enthusiasm to learn new skills, as well as some experience of taking photographs.

You should have access to a modern DSLR camera. However, users of 35mm film SLR cameras, Range-Finder Cameras (e.g. Leicas), ‘Bridge’ DSLR-style cameras (e.g. Fuji Finepix) or medium-format cameras will also benefit, but with limitations in some areas (e.g. film, print and scanning costs, using studio facilities with non-SLR cameras and limited camera functionality).

Course costs may include:
- Film camera users: Film, developing and printing.
- Travel to complete location work. 
- A USB Memory Stick, and other removable media (not more than 10 pounds).
