How will I be assessed?

The assessment is a 40 question multiple-choice exam paper and consists of three different sections. Applicants are required to have an understanding of:

- Driver and vehicle conditions
- Convictions and cautions policy
- Byelaws governing hackney carriage drivers
- Medical requirements
- Knowledge of the current tariff set by the Council in respect of hackney carriages

Knowledge of the whole of the South Lakeland District Council area is required in order to pass the test - it is not enough to simply know only part of the district.

Applicants must keep their knowledge of the district up to date with current changes within the district - for example, new businesses or change of names of public houses/schools etc.

You will also be asked questions which will establish if you have an understanding of road traffic legislation. Such questions will be aimed at the maintenance of vehicles and is necessary in order to promote public safety.

If an applicant fails a test after three attempts within a year they must wait a period of three months before re applying (previous pass marks will not be carried forward when making a renewed application). Candidates will be expected to answer 40 multiple choice questions achieving a 75% pass rate.
