The BA (Hons) Children, Schools and Families allows you to ‘top-up’ your Foundation Degree (Level 5) to a full BA Hons Degree (Level 6). The course looks at children in a broad context and prepares you for a professional career within the children and young people’s workforce.
The BA (Hons) Children, Schools and Families Top Up is awarded by the University of Central Lancashire, UCLan.
The full-time course runs one day per week over one year at Kendal College main site on Milnthorpe Road, Kendal.

What will I learn?
Modules on the BA(Hons) CSF top up programme include:
International Perspectives on Children’s Lives:
This module aims to provide the students with knowledge and insight into the issues facing children in an increasingly interconnected and globalised world. The focus is on the wider globalised context in which childcare policy and policy responses are developing.
Children’s Services & multi agency working:
The module aims to develop a critical appreciation of multi professional working and the current dynamic context in which this is developing. Students will develop a critical understanding of the professionalization of the children’s workforce and the implications for practice.
Learning from Work in Children’s Services:
This module draws on students’ experiences of working with children and YP. If you are not already in a relevant work setting, you will need to find a suitable work placement for a minimum of 12 days. The module will help you to apply your understanding of national policies, legislation and skills frameworks to your own working practice and consider your role as a ‘change agent’
Learning, Curriculum and Assessment:
The module is concerned with learning, curriculum and assessment and the relationship between these concepts. It focuses on the process, content, delivery and outcomes of the curriculum and how each informs the other. Ideas around what counts as valid knowledge will be explored and critically evaluated.
The Education of Vulnerable Young People:
This module is intended to give students an insight into the educational experiences and attainment of particularly vulnerable children and young people, such as children who have been victims of abuse, children who have become involved in crime, children in care, young carers, and teenage mothers. You will explore the underlying issues associated with the vulnerable situations children may find themselves in, and explore the consequences of these difficulties upon children’s educational experiences, achievements and prospects.
You will develop an independent project (6-8,000 words) within a chosen area of interest. You will be supported by a dissertation supervisor throughout the process.
The course is delivered through traditional lectures, seminars, workshops, peer support, reflective practice and independent study.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment throughout the course will be through written assignments, essays, reports, oral presentations, portfolios and a dissertation. These will be marked in line with University of Central Lancashire regulations.

Upon successful completion of this Level 6 qualification, you could further extend your opportunities and study towards a Post Graduate Certificate or Diploma in your field of interest Education, such as a PGCE in teaching, PGD in social care or additional needs or an MA in Social Work or Education.
Successful completion of a FdA in Children, Young People and their Services or another suitable Level 5 qualification in a related discipline.
In addition you may be asked to attend an interview at the college with a member of the course team.
As part of the entry criteria for this course you will need to have a check completed by the Disclosure and Barring service and this will need to be approved by your placement provider. This does not mean that if you have any previous convictions or warnings that you will not be able to join this programme, but an assessment will be completed as to your suitability to progress on to the programme. For students undertaking a dissertation as part of their course 2 UCLAN dissertation cover sheets will need to be purchased at 1.90 per sheet. Printing is 1p per sheet for black and white copying and 4p per sheet for colour.

Tuition fees displayed are payable per year. The fees displayed are for UK and EU students and are reviewed each academic year.
Tuition fee loans are available to all eligible students regardless of household income. The amount you pay back is dependent on how much you earn and not how much you owe and you won’t need to start repayments until you are earning more than £21,000 per year.
