Apprentice in Brickwork - Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass

Background to Employer: Muncaster Country.

We are a Historic Castle and working estate that is open to the general public as a tourist attraction in the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park. We are responsible for a large portfolio of historic buildings including Muncaster Castle (Grade 1 Listed) and various other tenanted properties, working farms, a public house and two hotels. We are also dedicated to Nature and Building Conservation and the promotion of education in both fields of expertise. As well as the Historic Castle and Estate, we have a Hawk and Owl Centre and we are currently utilising the Estates own timber in the repair of our buildings.

Brief overview of the role: The current building and maintenance team at Muncaster is made up of a Craftmason and a Joiner. The work being undertaken involves all aspects of building and property maintenance. We use traditional methods and materials when we carry out repair work as a lot of the modern building industries materials.

Vacancy description:

  • The key role of the apprentice is to learn and develop traditional building skills on a wide portfolio of historic property across the Muncaster Estate.  This includes a Grade 1 Listed Castle, the Curtilage Buildings, 30 Tenanted Houses, 4 Working Farms, a Public House and two Hotels.
  • The successful candidate will be trained in the mixing and applications of lime mortars (all aspects of), as well as undertaking a Construction based NVQ at Kendal College.  The NVQ will provide the backbone of the candidates knowledge of modern building materials and techniques which can be applied to the traditional buildings as well.
  • The day to day work experience will then give the candidate the hands on experience in a wide variety of situations to practice the techniques taught at the College.
  • The candidate will also be taught to work safely and effectively with materials used in the construction industry and also how to carry out work in a manner that promotes good work ethic.  They will also gain experience in the use of access equipment as a lot of work is carried out at height.
  • The candidate will assist the mason/joiner in the day to day maintenance operations as well pre-planned project works on both the Castle and the wider estate.  This could include any aspect of building and construction work, eg – painting and decorating, slating, pointing, stonework, brickwork, plastering, lead working, joinery work/repairs, etc.
  • We also expand our knowledge to learn new skills like gilding which we learned to carry out last our winter’s project in the Castle Library.
  • We also operate a ‘no labourers’ work ethic where everyone is involved in the mixing of materials, cleaning up, fetching and carrying etc.
