We are a wholesale bakery supplying cakes and bakes to many independent cafes, delis, farm shops and stores throughout the UK. We have been baking in Kendal for 11 years and have established a good local and national loyal customer following. We make cakes and bakes for food service and for retail sales. Quality is uppermost in all that we do.

Overview of the role: We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic apprentice who has a passion for baking. You will be working in all areas of our bakery kitchen, including weighing, mixing, baking, finishing, storage, customer care, hygiene, food safety and product development. We would expect you to contribute ideas to the team.

At Ginger Bakers you will be required to work as part of the bakery team. The job will cover all aspects of work within our kitchen. We have two kitchens, regular and gluten free you will be required to assist in both.

You will be:

  • Preparing and weighing out ingredients.
  • Making cakes and bakes
  • Decorating cakes and bakes
  • Wrapping and finishing
  • Labelling, storing and recording
  • Washing up and cleaning down
  • Assisting in stock control
  • Assisting in sales in our shop

We take quality very seriously and we are constantly monitoring and recording data to support this. As part of our food safety procedures we carefully record and monitor all aspects of the baking process.

We also encourage creativity and invest time in new product development and improvements.

We encourage personal development and will provide on and off site training opportunities.

Future prospects

We are looking to take on an apprentice who we can teach all the skills required for working in a small cake bakery. We would want to take them on as a permanent team member once the apprenticeship is complete. They would become an integral member of the team and be able to take on any of the roles within the bakery kitchen.

Things to consider

Proposed interview date: Monday 26th June 2017. The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

  • Product Testing. 

Professional Cookery, Level 3 Apprenticeship

The Hospitality Advanced Apprenticeship is a 12-18 month programme.  The Apprenticeship has a variety of routes for people working within the Hospitality Industry. 

The Apprentice Framework includes the Level 3 Diploma in Professional Cookery or Hospitality Supervision and Leadership which are competency based qualification. 

The Diploma has a variety of mandatory units including:
-  Health, Safety and Security
- Developing Working Relationships
- Food Safety
- Leading a Team
- Control Resources

The learner then chooses from a selection of optional units relevant to their chosen route and workplace.

The Framework also includes a Technical Certificate which is the Level 3 Certificate in Hospitality Practices and Principles.

Part three of the framework includes Functional Skills in English and Maths are also part of the framework. (Previous qualification in English and Maths can form exemptions for the function skills.)

Hours per week: 40 Days: Monday-Friday Time: 8-4pm There may be some flexibility required, you may be asked to change a weekday.
